In 2007 Microsoft office released the new MS office 2007. This new Office Suite introduced a new file format, Docx. The .Docx is actually a bundle of XML files that are zipped together when saved and then unzipped each time it is opened. A large growing percentage of computer users still do not have the available software to read or print docx documents and thus the need for Docx Viewer.

A docx viewer is an application created to help users who do not have MS Word or MS Office 2007 to open, read and print documents with the .docx extensions. Microsoft released the docx viewer to help more people access the docx files. The docx viewer is made to run on Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP2, Windows Server SP1 and Windows Vista. The viewer is available for download from the Microsoft website. Users with older versions of Windows such as Windows ME, Windows 95, 98 and older service packs cannot install and run the Microsoft docx viewer.

Other third party .docx viewers have been produced by others apart from Microsoft and made available online as free downloads. These usually also demand the same system requirements to be able to install and use. They however offer options to view other file formats such as odt or doc formats. Some docx converters can also be used as a docx viewer as they can be used to both convert and view docx documents.

Windows and Linux have some beta versions that can be installed as extensions of the Firefox browser and used to view docx files within the Firefox environment. These versions are however considered probably unstable. OpenXML has announced plans to produce a better version.

Docx files stored on the internet could be indexed and viewed using the Google search engine. Google converts the file to HTML which easy to read and an efficient way to save it as plain text.
